Off to the fair!

by kristi.palma

Who didn’t grow up loving the local fair? I have fond memories of my dad sinking an eight ball to win me the biggest stuffed animal, my older brother unsuccessfully trying to coax me onto the scariest rides, and sharing an oh-so-yummy and sugary fried dough treat with my mom. I loved the sites and sounds of the fair — the … Read More »

When the heat forces you in

by kristi.palma

This heat has been unbearable. And so we’ve fallen into rainy-day mode even though it’s sunny outside. When it’s too hot to play outside you have to become pretty inventive about what you do inside. Today it was “the color game.” We are spending time with family this week. And today we are keeping the kids indoors. The heat index is 110. … Read More »

T minus 3 hours…

by kristi.palma

We are 3 hours away from the highly anticipated — and slightly dreaded — family photo. And I’m on the computer. This is what I do to avoid stressing about an event, pretend today is not the day it’s happening. I do the same thing when I need to pack for a trip. It will be the day before we leave and … Read More »

Dreaming dipes

by kristi.palma

Last night I dreamed I was changing a perpetual dirty diaper. No matter how many times I wiped my daughter clean, the diaper stayed dirty and so did she. It was so frustrating and …well, gross. I live this crap every day (no pun intended), so why do I have to dream about it? When I hopped on a dream analysis … Read More »

Thank you. Mr. Paying Attention

by kristi.palma

I was watching that show, “What Would You Do?” on ABC the other night and producers had set up a scene at a playground in which a fake predator was trying to lure a child away. It was a relief to watch other parents jump all over this fake predator, asking him who he was and why he was talking to a little girl he didn’t know. The message was this: Get involved. I sat there on my couch thinking, I hope my children are always surrounded by alert strangers who care. Little did I know it would happen just two days later.

GPS and TTS

by kristi.palma

What happens when you mix a GPS with TTS (Talkative Toddler Syndrome)? You wind up lost. We are in Boston visiting family and I was driving alone in our rental with both my kids strapped in the back. I had no idea where I was and had to rely solely on GPS woman to get me there. “At the rotary, take the first exit, then veer slight left and go right,” said cheery, syrupy GPS woman.

The spirit of volunteerism

by kristi.palma

Tuscmoms.com was at Babypalooza this past weekend for the third year. And for the third year, we had no shortage of moms willing to help out. I don’t take their willingness to volunteer lightly. We are all busy moms and time is precious. It’s a testament to our site that these women are willing to stand in a mall for 4 hours to spread the Tuscmoms love.

Free fun for kids this summer

by kristi.palma

I’m from New York, where the phrase “It’s free” is used about as much as “Have a nice day.” There I go, playing into the stereotype. Shame on me. Anyway, back to my point. When I tell my mommy friends back home about the free summer activities for kids here, they can barely contain their jealousy (“Are you kidding?” One … Read More »

Heart Gallery tugs at your heart

by kristi.palma

While doing research for an article about foster parents, I was directed to Heart Gallery Alabama, a website full of Alabama foster kids waiting to be adopted. And I couldn’t stop reading. Heart Gallery Alabama offers a place where potential parents can view pictures of kids, read background information and even see videos and listen to audio interviews. How amazing that … Read More »
