Thank you Anna Paquin.
Because of you, my gap-toothed smile is now trendy.
But I will never embrace it the way you and countless other celebrities do. I hear about stars purposely getting gaps in their teeth, and I wonder why. I have hated my gap for as long as I can remember.
The worst is when a child looks up at me and asks, “Why do you have a hole in your teeth?” or “What’s wrong with your smile?” Ahh. Gotta love kids. So innocent. So honest.

There’s a Sick Room and a Well Room at the pediatrician’s office.
But what happens when you have one sick and one well child? You sweat.
That was me this morning when I took my 3 year-old son to the doctor and had to subject my 7 month-old daughter to a waiting room full of coughing, runny-nosed kids. My son was up all night in what turned out to be his first ear infection. He was so miserable he curled up in a waiting room chair and seemed to be sleeping. And my daughter was in her car seat at my feet — a sitting duck.

A mom I know said she’s tired of people ranting and raving about how much their lives suck on Facebook.
As I sit here watching the devastating images coming out of Haiti, I have to agree with her. My son may have refused his nap today. my daughter may be teething, I may need to lose a few pounds, and I sure do miss my family in NY. But my life does not suck.

Resolutions. I never keep them. So why do I make them?
Probably for the same reason I clip coupons I never wind up using — the mere act of doing it makes me feel like I’m trying. Well, in 2010 I’d like to be a better parent. I’ve already proven I can’t save money. Forget money. I’d rather save my child.
Save him from what?
First off, from becoming a bossy beast.

This photo gallery, called “Bad Santa,” cracked me up. I could relate. My son, who just turned 3, has been afraid of Santa all of his life.
“I don’t like Santa,” is what he tells me all year long.
We have not been able to get a photo of him on Santa’s lap until this year. I still can’t believe it finally happened. It’s a Christmas miracle.

It’s been a sad few days since I learned about the death of a local mom friend.
She passed away suddenly — a vibrant mother with a young son. How could this be? I was just talking and laughing with her a few weeks ago at a friend’s baptism celebration. We were talking about birthday parties and the holidays. She was always so cheerful and kind and a pleasure to be around.

My son will be 3 next week. And something has happened to him. These days I never know whether I’m going to get Dr. Jekyll or Whining Hyde.
Here is my son as Dr. Jekyll: Wakes up smiling and asks me politely for some juice and Kix. We play games and he sneaks me kisses and hugs throughout the day. We laugh a lot. Nap time isn’t a struggle (well, not as bad of one) and he eats his meals without fighting us over every mouthful.

Navigating my double stroller through thousands of bodies on University Boulevard Saturday wasn’t easy. But I was determined to finally tailgate, even if I had to do it with two kids.
A friend graciously offered me parking at her relative’s house downtown. It made it very easy for me to go. Before that, I had visions of parking in a far away lot and hauling an infant, toddler, and double stroller alone on a trolley. No way. I would have stayed home first.

My son Jack is Tigger this Halloween. The costume is adorable. It’s a one-piece furry orange suit with an ear-studded hood. OK, so it’s a tad small — he’s Tigger waiting for a flood. But it’s still adorable. We borrowed it from a friend. Jack is only 2 and not yet demanding in his costume needs. So I’m taking advantage for one more year and saving some loot. I’ll just shoot the photos from the knees up. No big deal. He’ll never know.

Yes, I just wrote about breast pumps and I’m writing about them again. But my last post was about dads and pumps. This one is about me and my pump. Hey, it’s hard not to be obsessed with pumps and breastfeeding when you live it 24/7. So bear with me. This little tale is about how I smuggled my pump into a wedding reception last weekend
